#13. Complementing HSR.

I recently went to the public consultation programme held at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. I shared my ideas as a concerned citizen, which I will share below.

The benefits of High Speed Railway (HSR) to Malaysia is clear. I was told numerous times about the time efficiency and massive economic spillover resulting from the HSR project. The project is great and it has managed a lot of hype on both sides of the Johor causeway.

What is to make this transportation mega project an even greater social project for the two great metropolises of Southeast Asia - Kuala Lumpur and Singapore?

I would opt for a cycling and running track to be built next to the HSR. If this happens, it will pave way for inter-city marathon and triathlon events. It will help to propel Malaysia and Singapore into important sporting destinations in the region. Meanwhile, it will bring the two nations closer while promoting sustainable development.

However, there is a critical issue that has to be solved, that is the safety of runners and cyclists along the route. Police and armed forces need to ensure the long route between the various cities are free from any potential hazardous events and vices. The proximity of the runners and cyclists to the electric line must also be maintained at a safe distance.

I would definitely love to travel to the southern parts of Malaysia with HSR when it is completed. Occasionally, I'd also love to enjoy the feeling of a ride on two wheels without worrying about the danger of getting hit by a car. I believe the cycling and running track will be a catalyst in making the transport systems in Malaysia and Singapore even more sustainable.
